The Road Home

The short version .....rode 5 hours on a bus without AC, Morgan took it out on the lady when given a few parenting pointers on how to dress her kids,Tally barfed all over herself, Tim, Adayla, and the taxi on the way home, what would have been a $6 cab ride therefore turned into a $30 cab fare, and we have all been throwing up and enjoying a good case of diarrhea for the last 3 days... and it has been all worth it -- it was a wonderful trip

The time went by too quickly and soon we were back on that bus to Shanghai. They all came to wish a good trip home and to come back next year! I think before the bus ride home and after effects, we would have had no doubts about going back. We probably will, I just need to forget the following:

The bus was just fine for about 3 hours and the air conditioner broke on a hot and humid day. Okay, so lets roll down the windows...they didn't open. So needless to say, we were a bunch of Sweaty Bettys!
Ryann got to hang out in her diaper because I had dressed her thinking the AC would be on.

Tally and Adayla's hair were wet! Thankfully the bus wasn't full this time and we had plenty of room to spread out. But I was more thankful that it was only that we didn't have AC and that the bus was still going. I joked with Tim earlier that I hoped we didn't get stuck on the road for hours waiting for another bus to pick us up!

We arrived back at the bus station and headed with our hands full for the taxi line. On the way, about 10 Chinese chewed me out for Ryann not wearing clothes. The temp was 85 or 90, I don't think she was going to freeze. Tim started saying things like well she is not your kid so that they didn't need to worry about how she was dressed. On the way to the taxi line, you are approached by a few unlicensed drivers looking to pick people up and make a few extra bucks. This one lady kept hounding us and then began to tell me how my kid needed some clothes. She got a good yelling from me....all in English, but I am thinking she totally understood even though she couldn't understand!

Finally we were in cab and the nice driver blasted the air towards us! Just when we started to feel relief, out of nowhere, Tally barfs all over everyone and the taxi. No warning, no crying after, just a few good up chucks and she was fine. So what do you do when that happens? We just laughed. There was nothing else we could do!

The cab fare was about 40 RMB, but Tim thought to offer the driver 200 RMB (almost $30) for being so nice and patient with Tally's barf. He couldn't have been happier with the tip. We were just grateful he didn't yell at us or kick us out of the taxi.

Home never felt so good! That was 4 days ago, Tally has had a "sore tummy" since then and is back in diapers, Adayla is better after 3 days, and Morgan and Tim were up a good part of the night Saturday letting it out which ever end felt the urge.....reminded us of the two days before we were married! We had expected that we might get sick and took all the precautions we could (other than completely no eating their food), but you know, we would have missed an amazing opportunity had we not gone. This trip has been one of our best experiences of being in China. That being said, there's no place like home... and our home is SHANGHAI!

I love your blog! What amazing experiences and I cannot believe how great your kids seem to be with all of the attention they get and trying new foods. I know that I would not be so eager to eat some, well most of the foods.

Thanks for sharing all of your adventures.

That was VERY interesting! All the photos were so neat, and the way the people live their lives...wow. It's amazing how different it can be in different areas of the world. That sounds like a trip you'll always remember. The ride home sounded awful. Thank goodness the kids didn't have to ride on your laps. I wonder why they didn't make the bus so the windows rolled down! Morgan, you make me laugh the way you yelled at that lady. What was she thinking telling you how to dress your kids?! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize it was REALLY hot outside and you don't want the baby over heating, which she could've quite easily in that bus. Hopefully she'll think twice before chewing someone else out over their parenting. That was nice of Tally to top it all off with the pukes...hehe. Anyway, that was incredibly interesting! Thanks for sharing.

That's good you had a great trip! Too bad all of you guys got sick. Poor Tally in the cab. Good for you Morgan for getting after the lady lecturing you on your kids. I would probably do the same thing, especially after the trip home you guys had. I love reading your adventures!
