Shoppers eager to buy goods on sale stampeded at a Carrefour supermarket in southwestern China on Saturday, trampling three people to death and injuring at least 31, state media reported.
Shoppers slipped as they rushed through a door at the Carrefour in Chongqing city at 8:30 a.m. to snap up sale items, and those that fell were then crushed by other shoppers, the Web sites of the Xinhua News Agency and People's Daily reported.
The People's Daily said the shoppers had lined up outside the store since 4 a.m. to buy discounted rapeseed oil used for cooking.
In addition to the three dead, Xinhua said that seven among the 31 injured were seriously hurt. Police in Chongqing said they had heard about the accident but declined to independently confirm the media accounts.
Telephone calls to French-based Carrefour SA's China headquarters in Shanghai rang unanswered

Carrefour is a favorite of the foreigners. It is like a Walmart Superstore, but carries many import items. Reading this story just irritates me, I just want to punch them. They are so impatient it will drive you crazy! Thankfully there isn't a day after Thanksgiving sales we will be going to. I do know an occasional person gets hurt in the States, but 3 dead and 7 seriously hurt of the 31 injured. Ahhh!

My 8 1/2 month pregnant friend shared her story with me today. She was crossing the street the other day at a busy intersection in Shanghai and somehow fell flat on her belly. The things she was carrying were scattered and there she was in the middle of the street trying to gather them and get back up. Not one person stopped to help her, noone asked her if she was okay, and noone helped her pick up anything. This place is so wierd sometimes!

oh my gosh, this is just terrible. I know- people will stare, but they won't intervene. It is so sad that people died!
